'At Mary Dean's CE Primary School, our art curriculum aims to inspire creativity, self-expression, and appreciation for diverse artistic traditions in every child.'
'Every child is an artist'
'Art education nurtures the imagination, builds self-confidence, and opens the mind to endless possibilities'- unknown.
At Mary Dean's CE Primary School, our intent for the art curriculum is to cultivate creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking in every child. We aim to provide an inclusive and inspiring environment where students can explore a variety of artistic techniques, learn about diverse artists and cultures, and develop their unique artistic voice. By fostering a love for art, we empower our children to express themselves confidently and appreciate the beauty and the value of creativity in the world around them.
Our art curriculum links to our school's core values:
Our place in the world: through exploring diverse cultures and artistic traditions, children learn to appreciate and respect different perspectives. By creating their own art, they express their unique identities and understand their role in the global community. This approach not only fosters creativity but also instils a sense of belonging and responsibility in the wider world.
Our wellbeing: our art curriculum offers children a creative outlet to express their emotions, reduce stress, and build self-esteem. Through engaging art projects and outreach, students develop a sense of accomplishment and find joy in the creative process, contributing to their overall mental and emotional health.
Our Voice: our art curriculum empowers children to find and use their voice by encouraging self-expression through various artistic mediums. By creating their own art, children learn to communicate their thoughts, feelings and unique perspectives, reinforcing the value of 'our voice' and fostering confidence in their ability to contribute to the world around them.
Our Aspirations: our art curriculum nurtures students' aspirations by encouraging them to dream big and believe in their creative potential. Through exploring various artistic techniques and learning about famous artists and their achievements, students are inspired to set their own artistic goals and pursue their passions.
Our Implementation:
Art is taught in blocks across the year, so that children achieve depth in their learning. For each topic there are key performance indicators to ensure children are learning the key knowledge from the unit studied. Children are also exposed to a range of artistic skills, mediums, tools and techniques which are tracked and progressive. By the end of Year 6, children will have explored their ideas and recorded their experiences. They will be proficient in drawing and painting and will have developed their observational and expressive skills. They will have a greater understanding of composition, colour, form and texture and understand how artists convey their work. They will have engaged in sculpture, print making and digital art and can evaluate their own and others’ work. Our Art Curriculum Impact:
Children leave each year with the knowledge and skills required to enable them to access and apply to subsequent learning. Children will be aware of different artists and artwork from a range of cultures and historical periods. Children will be able to make connections to previous learning and understand the relevance of these connections. Children will be assessed against the key performance indicators and the progression of skills document along with being provided opportunities to apply their learning and skills in the end of unit projects.
